Welcome to the Heads Up! Network!
Whether your agency has been a subscriber for some time or if you are a new comer to the Heads Up! Network, here are some guidelines and quick tips that will make using the Heads Up! Network easy and user friendly. As always, if you have questions or problems, please feel free to call the
TECHNICAL HELP DESK: 1-800-720-5608
Are you a new subscriber?
- Your agency will receive 3 boxes shipped via UPS containing your new satellite equipment; a satellite dish, a satellite receiver box and (in a smaller box) a LNB antenna. Once you have received all three boxes and you choose to have Heads-Up! to complete the installation, as opposed to installing the equipment yourself, please call the Technical Help Desk to schedule an installation appointment. Generally, your installation can be completed within one week from the date you receive the equipment. We highly recommend that the person responsible for the Heads Up! programming for your agency is on-site during installation. Once your system has been installed, either by your agency or us you will again need to call the Technical Help Desk to activate your system.
- Please turn your system "on" to receive the activation. Once your system has been activated you are ready to receive Heads Up! programming.
Guideline and Tips
First, we ask that you leave your satellite receiver plugged in with the power turned on at all times. This will not damage your unit. By leaving your system "on" at all times, your satellite receiver box will be able to receive necessary software upgrades and messages. You can turn the receiver box to "stand-by" by using the "power" button on your satellite remote control. If you are unable to keep the unit on or in the stand-by mode, you will need to have us "re-start" your system periodically. Call the Technical Help Desk for more information.
Heads Up! Programming is always shown on channel 9622
- Turn your TV, VCR (if applicable and satellite receiver to the "on" position. Make sure your TV and VCR (if applicable) are tuned to the same default channel, which is either channel 3 or 4, depending on the type of machines you have in-house. Press the "guide button" on your satellite remote control and using the "up and down" arrows, scroll to channel 9622, labeled "BTTV".
- Highlight "Heads Up! Network" program and press the "select" button on your satellite remote control. You are now on channel 9622.
Testing Your Satellite Signal
We strongly recommend that you test your Heads Up! satellite signal prior to the start of weekly programming. This can be done easily. Always remember that channel 9622 is a shared subscriber channel and that the Heads Up! programming occurs only at the scheduled times noted in your program guide. If you tune to channel 9622 and the Heads Up! programming has not yet begun, you will see a warning screen that says that the program is a "paid subscription" that you are not a subscriber of. You can always double-check that your system is working properly by tuning to channel 213 - "The NASA Channel" - which has 24 hours a day programming. By pressing the "guide" button on your satellite remote control, you can then scroll to channel 213 and press "select".
Still having Problems Getting a Signal?
Are you activated to receive programming? To make sure you are activated and will receive weekly Heads Up! programming:
- Turn your TV, VCR (if applicable) and satellite receiver to the "on" position. Press the "menu" button on your satellite remote control. Press the number "6" then "5" for purchase information. Make sure "Heads Up" appears on your screen.
- If you don't see "Heads Up", you need to call the Technical Help Desk to get activated.
Is your dish pointed in the right direction?
Your satellite should always be looking at 61.5 degrees. Bad weather or human tinkering can alter your dish's direction. One way to check to see if your dish is pointed in the right direction:
- Turn your TV, VCR (if applicable) and satellite receiver to the "on" position. Press the "menu" button on your satellite remote control. Press the number "6", then the number "1", then the number "1" again.
- You should see a filled in circle next to the number 61.5 in the circle located in the left-hand corner. If another number appears in the circle or if the screen doesn't leave the "acquiring signal" slate, please call the Technical Help Desk: 1-800-720-5608.
Do you know your smart card and receiver numbers?
Both your smart card numbers and receiver numbers contain vital information, which helps your system receive the Heads-Up network programming. You will also need these numbers to "activate" or "re-start" your system. To retrieve these numbers:
- Turn your TV, VCR (if applicable) and satellite receiver to the "ON" position. Press the "menu" button on your satellite remote control. Press the number "6", then the number "1" and then the number "3". Your smart card number (S) and receiver number (R) will appear followed by a series of 0's.
- You can always access these numbers by following the procedure, but you may want to make a written note of the numbers to make them easier to retrieve during technical updates.
Are your TV cables set-up correctly?
Your satellite dish is mounted outside your building, and wired directly into the room you have chosen. A "coax video cable" runs from the plate on the wall to the satellite receiver box (satellite in). Another "coax video cable" runs between the satellite receiver box (satellite out) to the TV (RF or VHF in).
Are you using a VCR?
There is a "coax video cable" coming from the plate on the wall going into the "satellite in" on the satellite receiver box. The next video cable will go from your TV (Video out) to your VCR (RF or VHF in). Another video cable then will go from your VCR (RF or VHF out) to your TV (RF or VHF in). Make sure your VCR and satellite receiver box are set on the same default channel as your TV. (Channel 3 or 4). Both settings are usually located on the back of the equipment. We recommend that you have someone at your site actually press record when the Heads-Up programming begins. If no one is able to be there and you would like to tape the show, please follow the following steps:
- Turn your TV, VCR and satellite receiver to the "on" position. Set all machines to their default channel (either 3 or 4). Press the "guide" button on your satellite remote control. Scroll to "Channel 213" (The NASA Channel which is aired 24 hours a day) and press "select". Once you see the NASA programming, press "9622". The TV screen will say, "You are not a Subscriber of this Program" or "BTTV". (That warning will disappear once the Heads-Up! programming begins).
- Program your VCR as you would normally, setting it to record Channel 3 (or 4 if that is your default channel).
